By Bus
Getting around Tainan by bus is easy. Fortunately for tourists, the Tainan government supports a bus route specifically for tourists, although both the Tourist and City buses are fully accessible.
- Tourist Bus: Tour bus 88 runs daily (NT$18, hourly from 9am to 6pm) to all major historic sites. Tour bus 99 runs to Sihcao Dazhong Temple, in Taijiang National Park, or Taiwan Salt Museum (NT$18 to NT$36, every 30 minutes from 9am to 5.15pm, more frequently on weekends). The visitor information centre has a map of all routes and stops.
- City Bus: The City Bus covers most of the city. Basic fares are NT$18, and buses run every 30 to 60 minutes. The hub across from the train station is divided intoCity Bus North StationandCity Bus South Station. When you are facing the train station, City Bus North station is on your left. Most city buses stop at both stations, as do the tourist buses.
By Taxi
Taxis are travelers’ favorite way of getting around Tainan City for its abundant accessibility and affordability. To hail a taxi, just look for the light on the roof and raise your arm on the curbside. To get to your destination, tell the driver two street names to indicate an intersection or an address. We recommend having your hotel staff write the address on your hotel information card in Chinese, or save the address in your phone. Fares listed below:
- Daytime: $85 for the initial 1.5 km and then $5 per 250 meters.
- Surcharges of 10% – 20% may be added during peak traffic, or late night hours.
- Tipping is optional, and not expected.
By T-Bike
T-Bikes are a government-provided, environmentally conscious, and fun way to travel the streets of Tainan. Available to residents and visitors alike, T-Bikes allow you to travel the streets of Tainan easily, and cheaply.
Generally, it is quite safe to bike in the city as motorcycles, scooters and cars are used to people on bikes and give way to bikers. However, still be sure to familiarize yourself with the laws of the road before you start biking on the road as they may be different from your home country!
