Kaohsiung’s public transit network, the KRT, is handy for visitors, going to all of the main spots that travelers want to visit. There are two lines, making the system very easy to use. Trains generally run 6am-midnight and abundant English signs and maps make the system easy to use.
Individual fares start at $20 and can be purchased at every station. A day pass costs $200 (plus $70 deposit) – buy directly from any staffed station booth. A bus/MRT/ferry combo pass is $200 (no deposit).
By LRT
Kaohsiung is the first city in Taiwan to launch a Light Rail Transit (LRT) system. A total of 37 stations is planned for the loop line to facilitate the exploration of Kaohsiung. Currently in operation is the segment from Station C1 Lizihnei to Station C14 Hamasen; passengers may board or alight at any station along this segment. The LRT service starts from 7am, and fares are based on the distance traveled. Passengers may purchase their tickets at automatic ticket vending machines available at each station or use EasyCard.
- Operating Hours: 7am~10pm, running at 15-minute interval
- Step-by-step user instructions are displayed on the automatic ticket vending machines. Please follow the instructions to purchase your single journey ticket.
- Children below the age of 6 need not purchase tickets. However, they must be accompanied by a paying adult or guardian.
By Bus
The Kaohsiung bus system is very commonly used by locals and visitors alike and ties in with the KRT. The bus hub is directly in front of the train station, and buses have English signage at the front and electronic English displays inside indicating the next stop.
To plan your trip, simply key in your start location and the destination on Google Maps, you can count on the reliable and accurate route options.
Routes are clearly mapped in English at every KRT station, and a one-zone fare is $12.
By Taxi
Taxis are travelers’ favorite way of getting around Kaohsiung City for its abundant accessibility and affordability. To hail a taxi, just look for the light on the roof and raise your arm on the curbside. To get to your destination, tell the driver two street names to indicate an intersection or an address. We recommend having your hotel staff write the address on your hotel information card in Chinese, or save the Chinese address in your phone. Fares listed below:
- Daytime: 80TWD for the initial 1.5 km and then $5 per 250 meters.
- Surcharges of 20% may be added during peak traffic, or late night hours (11pm to 6am)
- Tipping is optional, and not expected
By C-Bike
C-Bikes are a government-provided, environmentally conscious, and fun way to travel the streets of Kaohsiung. Available to residents and visitors alike, C-Bikes allow you to travel the streets of Kaohsiung easily, and cheaply.
Generally, it is quite safe to bike in the city as motorcycles, scooters and cars are used to people on bikes and give way to bikers. However, still be sure to familiarize yourself with the laws of the road before you start biking on the road as they may be different from your home country!
